Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about high-risk auto insurance, SR-22, and protecting your rate.

How quickly can a traffic violation affect my insurance rate?

Violations typically appear on your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) within 30 days of conviction or payment. Insurance companies may check your MVR at renewal, mid-term review, or when you apply for new coverage. Once visible, it can immediately impact your rates.

Can my insurance increase before my court date?

While most companies check your MVR at renewal time, some may run mid-term checks. Additionally, if you're convicted (or pay the fine, which counts as a conviction), it can appear on your record before your next renewal. Acting quickly gives you the best chance of securing favorable rates.

What is SR-22 insurance and how does it work?

SR-22 is a certificate your insurance company files with the California DMV proving you carry minimum liability coverage. It's required after DUI, driving without insurance, or license suspension. It's NOT a type of insurance — it's a form added to your existing policy. We handle same-day electronic filing.

How long do I need SR-22 in California?

Most SR-22 requirements in California last 3 years from the date your driving privileges are restored. The 3-year clock restarts if your policy lapses at any point during that period.

Can I get insurance with a suspended license?

Yes. You can purchase auto insurance in California even with a suspended license. In fact, you typically need insurance (with SR-22) as part of the reinstatement process. We work with carriers that specialize in insuring drivers with suspended licenses.

How much will my rate increase after a DUI?

DUI increases vary significantly — anywhere from 50% to 200%+ depending on the carrier, your history, and other factors. However, by shopping multiple high-risk carriers, many of our clients find rates more affordable than they initially feared.

Do all traffic violations affect insurance the same way?

No. Major violations (DUI, reckless driving, hit & run) have much greater impact than minor ones (speeding, running a red light). Some carriers also weigh violations differently. That's why shopping multiple carriers is so important.

Can I switch insurance companies after a ticket?

Absolutely. You can switch carriers at any time. If you act before the violation appears on your MVR, you may be able to start a new policy at a more favorable rate. Even after it appears, different carriers rate violations differently — shopping can save you hundreds.

What happens if I let my insurance lapse while I have SR-22?

Your insurance company will immediately notify the DMV via an SR-26 form. This typically results in license suspension, possible fines, and — critically — your 3-year SR-22 requirement may restart from the date of reinstatement.

How fast can I get coverage?

In many cases, same-day. We can quote you over the phone, bind coverage immediately, and file SR-22 electronically — all within a single call. Many clients are fully covered within hours of contacting us.

Do you only cover California drivers?

Currently, we specialize in California auto insurance. Our agents are licensed in California and have deep expertise in CA DMV requirements, SR-22 filing, and the state's high-risk insurance market.

Is there a way to remove a DUI from my insurance record?

We cannot remove violations from your driving record. However, DUI convictions typically impact insurance rates for 3-5 years (depending on the carrier). After that period, with a clean record, your rates should decrease. We help plan for this transition and re-shop rates as your record improves.

What information do I need to get a quote?

For a basic quote, we need your name, phone number, zip code, and the type of violation you're dealing with. For a precise rate, we'll also ask about your vehicle, current insurance, and driving history. The whole process takes about 5 minutes.

Are you a real insurance agency?

Yes. FasTrak Insurance Solutions is a licensed independent insurance agency in California. Our agents are individually licensed by the California Department of Insurance. We represent multiple carriers and shop the market on your behalf.
